There have been cases illustrated where using what-aboutisms is a proper logical counter, but most the time people just like to shout fallacy at each other so they dont have to think about the point they are making.

Whataboutism is a fallacy when it is used to justify a behavior instead of pointing out hypocrisy itself.
“It’s okay because you do it too” vs “You can’t claim moral superiority in this case because”
