  • While I don’t have any statistics, other than just my impression after reading news or talking to people:

There seem to be people unaware that what they are doing is a form of mental torture. There are (at least what it seems) a lot of toxic relationships, and there are instances where neither the victim nor the perpetrator realize how their actions affect themselves or the other part.

I am far from excusing anyone who behaves in a mentally torturous way and agree that they should be punished, but torture might not be as intentional in all situations.

IMO, we should properly categorize the different kinds of torture and the different severity, and perform punishment based on those categorizations. It makes sense, at least to me, to have a stronger punishment for IDF, than for a toxic mother somewhere.

A couple of things I have read as a comment on this post that I would consider torture:

    • Rape (this should be classified as torture today)
    • Burying people alive
    • Throwing someone in a volcano (in a world where dying is an impossibility)

Some that I am more uncertain on:

    • Environmental destruction (one could argue that this is indirect torture, as the end result could lead to people being starved, or harmed in other torturous ways)

  • Unfortunately this is true for advertisements/sponsorships everywhere. Not sure if there is a true one size fit all solution for fixing these products other than individual channels actually vetting/checking who pays them money.

There are some good channels that unfortunately just take whatever sponsor deal they get. I ended up using sponsorblock for the most part, and then support those channels I care about on patreon/ko-fi

edit: just changed some phrasing to not make my rambling as rambly

  • It advertises on multiple platforms, so it must be evil?

I don’t understand this mentality, just because a youtuber is sponsored by a product, the product must be bad/malicious/acting in bad faith.

There are many channels on youtube that aren’t morally corrupt or soulless. If a company sponsors a channel on yt, it just means more people become aware of the product. which is the whole point of the sponsorships.

  • I do actually know a fair share of people using Linux in my social circle, but a lot of them uses both windows and Linux. My family uses Linux for their private devices, as that was a requirement to get my technical support. And an increasing number of my friends are moving over to Linux.

What I find weird is the sudden increase of 10% (from 18.16% to 29.04%). Like, did everyone get back from vacation after a Linux conversion camp or something?

  • Against my better judgement, let me ask you this.

What makes you say they are protected in jail? Because they get to be alive?

Have you seen how people in jail are being treated? (At least in America)

Is it not better for them to be kept alive so they can regret their actions, rather than ending their existence? Giving them opportunity to pay for their actions with something else than their lives?

Also, why should we not attack the underlying problem of why people commit these atrocious actions to begin with? Do you really believe they were born with the intention of committing these crimes?

If you are willing to live with yourself after murdering another human being, you are no different from the rapists who are willing to live with themselves after damaging another human being for life. They might be evil human beings, but they are still human.

  • So I tested Remmina some more, and yea, my expectations for the exec plugin were broken. It only runs commands locally, I really thought it was for sending saved commands remotely.

I guess ARD is king, at least from the solutions I know of. Personally, I achieve the “see all screens (or well ssh connections)” and the “send command across all connections” with tmux. And if I need RDP, SPICE or VNC, I use Remmina.

Windows users can use Royal TS, but that is paid and proprietary.
